Carol and Laura Mooka and their brother Amos grew up on Prince of Whales Island (Muralag) speaking Kalaw Lagaw Ya and Torres Strait Kreole, the language spoken in this story. English was their third language. Both their parents are originally from Mabuiag Island in the Western Torres Strait. Carol wrote this story in Townsville where she lives with her nuclear family. Later Laura did paintings on Muralag Island where she still lives with her children, and with her Dad, and her Mum too until she passed away in 2002. This is the first book for both Carol and Laura, and hopefully the first of many creative collaborations.
