Growing up at the community market garden in Halifax near Ingham, the late Violet Sirriss brought up five children in North Queensland. In her later years as an Elder of the Nywaigi people she was committed to the education and cultural strengthening of her people especially the younger generations. She worked for Shalom Christian College in Townsville and after retirements, researched her own language and wrote stories. She always encouraged her grandchildren.
